about

Nights Of Brightness. 'Nimbus' is just under 17 minutes of berlin school heaven! Alien sounds of echoing as if in underground chambers of caves on a faraway world is joined with atmospheric sound, then a powerful top-notch sequence arrives, and effects are added, the sequencing morphs and already this is a wonderful melting pot of a track! Swooshes and effects takes me into the clouds and then even higher. It feels like I am on a ride of a lifetime! Tranquillity eventually takes over towards the end and closes this wonderful piece. Wow! 'Elipse' starts with strange sounds that remind me of building robots then a lead line bursts through and a heavy industrial kraftwerk-like beat comes in and fantastic lead lines fly over the top. What a fantastic track at just under 6 minutes. 'Metallic Core' starts with weird echoing sounds that give way to a sequencer bouncing over the top from ear to ear on my headphones, a rhythm builds and effects come and go. This is mesmerising stuff and I imagine being on an 'air-bike' flying with the contours of an alien terrain. Effects sounding strange then a melodic lead line joins and the rhythmic sequencing shifts down to a lower key, the lead line playing along with it. It fades out after just 10 minutes but could have gone on, I loved this one. 'Mr Ivan' launches into a sequencer crazy fest with a memorable tune that could be a theme to a classic sci-fi tv series or a futuristic alien version of 'L.A. Streethawk'. Great playing here from Javi. What a fantastic track, one of the best I have heard from the synth-wizard! 'Fugitive Star' starts atmospherically like you are in deep space then a rapid sequence takes over as the atmos fades. Flute and wind sounds join in, how sublime! Sound effects come and go and a melody line is introduced and atmos returns with more effects. This piece is really body moving stuff that takes you on a fantastic ride! Atmos returns and it fades out. Great stuff. 'Beta' is all funky, rhythmic and has another fantastic melodic lead line that is so catchy that Jean-Michel Jarre would be jealous! Javi can certainly play and write a great tune that is a gift too few possess! Final piece is 'Protoplanet', burbling sounds and heavy atmos resonate through you, then a swoosh and rhythm starts steadily and is actually slightly creepy to start with but hypnotic, then a high register sequence tinkles over the top to lighten the mood of the piece, as if scaring the shadows away. There are little crescendos and a pitch-bending lead line that I loved. Choir sounds are eventually heard at about 9 minutes. This is imaginitive and thought provoking music that I love very much. This piece ends the album and has brightened up my night for sure! Javi's albums get better and makes me want to play them again. An essential purchase. Thank you Javi. Review by Geoff Mason
